Why This Lesson Matters

Strategy is about choice. And choice under uncertainty is what leadership is. This lesson teaches you how to think strategically about AI's impact on your industry—not just for the next quarter or year, but for the decade ahead when AI will reshape every competitive advantage and business model in your sector.

Many executives approach AI as a technology adoption problem: Which tools should we implement? How do we execute faster than competitors? But that's tactical thinking in a strategic moment. The real questions are deeper: How is AI changing what creates value in our industry? What new business models become possible? What established competitors become vulnerable? What new threats emerge? Where should we position ourselves to win, not just today, but through the transformation ahead?

This lesson develops your capability to think at that level. You will learn frameworks for analyzing industries, methods for understanding competitive dynamics in the age of AI, and approaches to visionary strategy that position your organization not as a follower of change, but as a shaper of it.

For Strategic Leaders Only

This lesson assumes you are already an expert in your industry and understand your competitive landscape. You understand your business model, your value chains, your customers, and your competitors. This lesson teaches you how to think about all of that differently in light of AI, and how to make the strategic choices that will determine your future.

What You Will Master

This lesson develops four core strategic capabilities. Each chapter builds on the previous one, taking you from industry analysis through to ecosystem strategy and strategic partnerships.

Chapter 1.1 – Industry Analysis & Competitive Dynamics teaches you how to analyze your industry with fresh eyes in light of AI. You will learn to examine value chains, identify where AI creates greatest value, understand what parts of your value chain become vulnerable, and assess how competitor strategies are shifting. You will learn to spot industry inflection points and determine whether your industry is experiencing first-order change (doing the same business more efficiently with AI) or second-order change (entire new business models become possible).

Chapter 1.2 – Visionary Strategy Development teaches you how to develop strategy that doesn't just respond to change but shapes it. You will learn frameworks for imagining your industry's future, identifying the 2-3 strategic pillars that will define winners versus losers, and making the bold choices that position your organization for leadership. This chapter is about developing the strategic vision that guides all your other decisions.

Chapter 1.3 – Strategic Positioning & Competitive Advantage focuses on how you translate vision into positioning. What is your organization's distinctive advantage in the AI era? What competitive moats can you build? How do you differentiate? This chapter teaches you to think deeply about positioning and the specific capabilities you need to build to own your strategic position.

Chapter 1.4 – Ecosystem Strategy & Strategic Partnerships recognizes that no organization wins alone anymore. This chapter teaches ecosystem thinking—how to develop strategy that creates value not just for your organization but for an ecosystem of partners, customers, suppliers, and complementors. You will learn how to identify the right partnerships, manage ecosystem dynamics, and position your organization as a leader within ecosystems that matter.

How the Chapters Connect

Think of these four chapters as building a strategic architecture. Chapter 1.1 gives you the foundation: clear-eyed analysis of your industry and how AI is reshaping it. Chapter 1.2 builds the vision: the strategic direction that will guide your choices. Chapter 1.3 translates vision into positioning: your distinctive advantage and the capabilities you need. And Chapter 1.4 extends your thinking to ecosystem level: how you win not alone but by creating value for a broader ecosystem.

Work through them in order. The frameworks in later chapters build on concepts introduced earlier, and the strategic thinking becomes progressively more sophisticated.

Strategy Requires Judgment

Throughout this lesson, you will notice we teach frameworks and methodologies. But frameworks are not substitutes for judgment. Strategy at this level requires making hard choices based on incomplete information, understanding your organization's unique position and capabilities, and having the conviction to pursue a direction even when the path is uncertain. Use the frameworks as thinking tools, but bring your experience and judgment to everything you learn.

Each chapter is a comprehensive treatment of a core strategic capability. Work through them in order and take time to apply the frameworks to your own industry and organization.

Learning Objectives

After completing all four chapters in this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Analyze your industry using systematic frameworks that identify how AI is reshaping value chains, competitive advantage, and business models.
  • Develop visionary strategy that positions your organization to shape your industry's future rather than merely respond to change.
  • Define strategic positioning that reflects your organization's distinctive advantage and the capabilities you need to own that position.
  • Build ecosystem strategy that creates value not just for your organization but for a broader ecosystem of partners and stakeholders.
  • Make strategic choices with conviction even in conditions of uncertainty, knowing your industry, your competition, and your position.

Real-World Application

As you work through this lesson, you will develop a strategic analysis of your own industry or organizational context. You will examine how AI is changing competitive advantage in your specific sector. You will develop a visionary strategy that addresses the key strategic questions facing you. You will articulate your strategic positioning. And you will map the ecosystem partnerships that matter most to your future.

By the end of this lesson, you will have created a substantial strategic document that can guide your organization's AI-related decisions over the coming years. This is not an academic exercise. It is real strategy work with immediate applicability to your leadership role.

Key Takeaway

The leaders who win in the age of AI will not be those who move fastest or copy competitors' tactics. They will be the ones who understand their industries most deeply, think most strategically about where AI creates value, and have the conviction to make bold choices about their organization's future. This lesson develops that strategic thinking.
