Anatomy of an
Effective Prompt

Every effective prompt has structure. The CRISP framework breaks that structure into five essential dimensions: Context, Role, Instructions, Scope, and Parameters. Master this framework and you will never write a mediocre prompt again.

Why Prompt Structure Matters

Think about how you communicate with other people. When you give someone instructions, do you just say "build me a table" with no other context? Probably not. You specify what kind of table, what it is for, what dimensions matter, what style you prefer, what constraints exist, and why you are asking. The more complex the task, the more context and specification you provide.

Language models are similar. When you give vague instructions with no context, the model has to guess what you want. It will make assumptions based on training data patterns, which are often wrong. When you structure your prompt carefully, you eliminate ambiguity and guide the model toward the exact output you need.

The CRISP framework is a thinking tool. It helps you ensure that your prompts cover the essential dimensions. You do not need to use all five elements for every prompt. Simple tasks might only need instructions. But complex tasks benefit enormously from systematic structure.

The Framework as a Checklist

Use the CRISP framework as an audit checklist for important prompts. Before you submit a prompt that matters, ask yourself: "Have I provided context? Is my desired role clear? Are my instructions unambiguous? Have I set boundaries? Are my parameters specific?" Often you will realize you are missing something critical.

Dimension 1: Context

What Context Is

Context is the background information and situation that frames your request. It answers the question: "Why are you asking this and what is the broader situation?" Context helps the model understand not just what you want, but why you want it. This is crucial because different goals lead to different best answers.

Context might include: what problem you are trying to solve, who the audience is, what industry or domain you are in, what constraints or limitations exist, what has been tried before, or what the current situation is.

Context Examples

Without context: "Write a job description for a software engineer."

With context: "I am a startup CTO looking to hire a senior full-stack engineer for a Series A company. We are building a fintech platform in an emerging market where infrastructure is unreliable. We need someone who is comfortable working with legacy systems, understands payments processing, and can move fast on uncertain requirements. We are competing against better-funded companies, so we need a team player who mentors junior engineers."

The second version provides the model with actual context. It will produce a completely different job description than the vague version — one that actually matches your situation.

Why Context Matters

Without context, the model assumes you want a standard job description for a standard tech company. With context, it understands the specific situation and produces something targeted. Context is often the difference between generic and custom, between adequate and excellent.

Dimension 2: Role

What Role Means

Role is the perspective or persona you want the model to adopt. Instead of asking "summarize this paper," you might ask "Explain this paper as if you were teaching it to a smart 15-year-old with no background in the field." Or instead of asking "Give me marketing ideas," you might ask "You are a growth marketer at a B2B SaaS company. Give me ideas for improving customer acquisition in our market segment."

Roles work because they anchor the model to a specific perspective, knowledge level, and communication style. Different roles produce dramatically different outputs from the same task.

Role Examples

Without role: "What should our company do about sustainability?"

With role: "You are the Chief Sustainability Officer of a manufacturing company with $2B in revenue. The CEO wants a comprehensive sustainability strategy that improves our environmental impact AND maintains profitability. You need to present this to the board next month. What is your strategic plan?"

The second version specifies an actual role with specific constraints and audience. The model will produce more nuanced, strategic thinking rather than generic sustainability advice.

Common Roles

You can use roles for domain expertise ("You are a UX researcher"), audience level ("You are teaching this to beginners"), perspective ("You are an engineer from the 1990s looking at modern cloud infrastructure"), or specific personas ("You are a skeptical CFO who needs to be convinced").

Dimension 3: Instructions

What Instructions Are

Instructions are the specific task you want the model to perform. They answer: "What exactly do you want me to do?" Instructions should be clear, direct, and unambiguous. They specify the action: write, summarize, brainstorm, analyze, translate, compare, evaluate, or generate.

The difference between good and bad instructions is often just one word. "Summarize this" is vague. "Extract the three key limitations discussed in this paper and explain why each one matters" is specific.

Instruction Examples

Without clarity: "Give me ideas for improving our onboarding."

With clarity: "Generate ten specific ideas for reducing the time it takes a new customer to achieve their first success metric. Focus on ideas that can be implemented in the next quarter without major engineering effort. For each idea, provide the expected impact and effort level."

The second version specifies exactly what you want: the number of ideas, the specific metric you care about, the time constraint, effort constraints, and the format you want the answer in.

Dimension 4: Scope

What Scope Is

Scope defines the boundaries and constraints. It answers: "What is included? What is excluded? How much should you go?" Scope prevents the model from going off track or producing output that is too broad or too narrow.

Scope might specify: length limits, domain boundaries, what to include or exclude, level of detail, time period, audience constraints, or technical constraints.

Scope Examples

Without scope: "Analyze the competitive landscape in our market."

With scope: "Analyze the competitive landscape for B2B project management software in North America. Focus on direct competitors with products similar to ours. For each competitor, discuss pricing, core features, target customer segment, and competitive advantages. Exclude indirect competitors and geographic regions outside North America. Keep the analysis to under 2000 words and focus on information from the last 12 months."

The scope version tells the model exactly what to include, what to exclude, the geographic focus, the time window, length constraints, and the specific structure you want.

Dimension 5: Parameters

What Parameters Are

Parameters are specific requirements about format, tone, style, structure, or output format. They answer: "How should the output be formatted? What tone should it have? What style should it use?" Parameters are often what separate "good output" from "exactly what I needed."

Parameters might specify: tone (formal, casual, conversational), format (bullet points, paragraph form, table), length, structure (outline, narrative, summary with details), language level, technical level, or specific output format.

Parameter Examples

Without parameters: "Write a proposal for a new project."

With parameters: "Write a proposal for a new project in the following format: Executive Summary (2-3 sentences), Problem Statement (1 paragraph), Proposed Solution (2 paragraphs), Expected Outcomes (3-5 bullet points), Timeline (quarter-by-quarter Gantt chart format), and Budget (table with line items). Use professional but conversational tone. Assume the reader is not technical but understands our business domain."

The parameters version specifies the exact structure, which sections to include, what format different sections should use, the tone, and the assumed knowledge level of the audience.

Putting It All Together: Complete Examples

Example 1: Marketing Campaign Brief

Bad Prompt: "Create a marketing campaign for our new product."

Better Prompt (with CRISP):

We just launched a B2B analytics platform targeted at e-commerce companies with $5M-50M annual revenue. Our main competitors are Shopify Analytics and custom solutions.

// ROLE
You are our VP of Marketing. You understand both the technical capabilities of our product and the business problems our customers face.

Develop a go-to-market campaign for our launch.

// SCOPE
Focus on North American e-commerce businesses. The campaign should work with our current $50K budget and team of two people.

Format as: Campaign Name, Core Message, Target Channels (2-3 specific channels with why), Key Activities (5-7 specific actions), Expected Metrics (3-5 KPIs to track), and Timeline (first 90 days, week-by-week).

Example 2: Code Review Request

Bad Prompt: "Review this code."

Better Prompt (with CRISP):

// CONTEXT
We are a team of three engineers building a real-time collaboration tool. This is a performance-critical path in our system.

// ROLE
You are an experienced systems engineer who cares about performance, maintainability, and security.

// INSTRUCTIONS
Review this code for correctness, performance, and maintainability.

// SCOPE
Focus on the critical path issues. We can ignore nice-to-have improvements. This code runs in production handling 10K concurrent connections.

// PARAMETERS
Format as: Issues Found (with severity), Performance Concerns (if any), Security Considerations, and Suggested Improvements (prioritized).

Common Anti-Patterns to Avoid

Assuming all context is shared: Just because context is obvious to you does not mean it is obvious to the model. State it explicitly.

Mixing multiple roles: Asking the model to think as both a skeptic and a believer creates confusion. Use one primary role.

Vague instructions with specific parameters: Specifying that you want output in bullet format does not help if the actual task is ambiguous.

Scope creep: Starting with tight scope then adding "but also could you..." midway through. Define boundaries upfront.

Skipping the "why": The model gets better results when it understands why you are asking, not just what you are asking.
